Blaufränkisch

Blaufränkisch is Austria's leading red variety for wines with ageing potential. VIVC traces it to Blaue Zimmettraube and Heunisch Weiss and gives Slovenia as its country of origin; it is also known as Lemberger in Germany and Kékfrankos in Hungary. Of its 2,714 ha in 2020, 2,534 ha — more than nine tenths — are in Burgenland, where it is the variety of the Mittelburgenland and Eisenberg DACs and the red of Leithaberg. The wines are deep in colour, with dark berries, spice and firm acidity.
