Furmint

Furmint is the white variety of Hungary's Tokaj, which VIVC gives as its country of origin, with Heunisch Weiss as one parent; in Austria it is also known as Zapfner. It has a long history in Rust on Lake Neusiedl, where it was used for the sweet Ruster Ausbruch, and was replanted there after nearly disappearing. In 2020 Austria had just 20 ha, up from 9 ha in 2015, 17 ha of them in Burgenland. The wines have high acidity and are made both dry and nobly sweet.
