Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner is Austria's signature white grape and by far its most planted: 15,015 ha in 2020, about a third of the country's vineyards. VIVC records it as of Austrian origin, with Traminer (Savagnin) as one parent; the other parent is not given. Almost all of it — 13,596 ha — grows in Lower Austria: the Weinviertel, Wachau, Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental and Wagram, as well as in Vienna. The wines range from light, fresh and peppery to full, dense wines for ageing, and it is also used for Sekt.
